As I’m writing this, it’s 7:55pm on a Saturday night. Am I adding the finishing touches to my über fabulous hit-the-town look? No. I’m in my PJs on my cream couch (the covers of which I have to wash frequently, care of a certain black feline called Merlot). I admit this is pity worthy and probably made worse by the fact that I have Rambo III blaring on DStv in the background.
I have a perfectly good excuse for the PJs at this impossibly early hour. I’ve just spent the most stupendous day at Constantia Uitsig. As property goes, this is serious Golden Mile stuff with awesome views across the Constantia Valley and the back of Table Mountain in the distance. Uitsig has a particularly delightful cricket oval surrounded by huge oak trees where I’ve spent many a lovely Sunday pretending to watch chaps in silly white outfits trying to play this fine game. But this weekend the pitch is covered. See it’s the annual Constantia Food and Wine Festival – a showcase of the wine producers of this valley.

Eagles Nest, Constantia Glen, Uitsig, Steenberg, Klein Constantia, Beau Constantia and more, they’re all here. R150 buys you a ticket at the venue and gives you a glass and tasting coupons. Of course, once you’ve decided on your fave, you can buy a bottle and settle down to some serious ‘kuiering’. Naturally there are loads of lovely nibbles. Fancy a pulled pork taco? Head on over to the Cellars Hohenort stand. What about Karoo lamb chops with yoghurt dressing and chickpea salad? Or maybe some duck liver parfait with apricot chutney? And for sweets some ice cream from The Creamery. Or maybe blueberry cheesecake from The Larder. The choices are pretty much endless.
There are tables and brollies but, having been there before, I knew all about the oak trees, so we packed a picnic blanket and got a bit territorial about our shade in the 36 degree heat. It’s the perfect day out for families as there are loads of fun things for kids to do too. Bottom line? If you’re in Cape Town and reading this on Sunday, the 13th of April, get yourself over there because it’s still on for the day. Gotta go now, as I’m missing some awfully ‘excellent’ Rambo dialogue.
